Kaba Modern: Often Imitated, Never Duplicated

ji-memoirs:

It has been two hours since the sun set in Irvine, California, and, as usual, there’s a still silence all around. Not a car in sight. While there are no cars or movements to break the picture of the still night on West Peltason, there is a symphony of movements being conducted in a brightly lit room further up the street at UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor Arts School that show evidence of life. Dance studio room 120 is tucked behind the main Claire Trevor Theatre, and beyond the metal double doors, luminescent white lights flood the large rectangular room. The first thing that is visible when walking into the studio is a heap of bags, books, snacks, and all the other clutter that has been pushed strategically against the back wall to not interfere with the dance floor on which 28 dancers stand. Saaya, the dance co-coordinator, yells a word of encouragement, “That was good guys… but let’s do it one more time. We can do better than this. Family!” She smiles as a couple others echo her call with a drawn out and cheery, “Fa-a-a-a-mily!” In this brightly lit room, eleven days before a competition, 28 dancers stand in one mirrored dance studio - this is Kaba Modern.
